Mingus Mill
Mingus Mill
Mingus Mill, located in the Oconoluftee Valley just west of Cherokee, NC, was built in 1886 and was the largest mill in the Smokies. At it's peak it served over 200 families. The charge for using the mill was one-eighth of the grain brought for milling. Widows were not charged. The penstock's 22 feet of raceway created enough constant pressure to produce about 11 horsepower. The capacity of the mill was about 6 bushels of corn per hour (350 pounds).
