Grand Prismatic Spring +
Grand Prismatic Spring, adjacent to Excelsior Geyser, is over 300 feet across and is the most colorful of Yellowstone's springs. Water temperature in the middle (blue water) is about 188 degrees - too hot for any living organism. However, around the cooler edges, microscopic algae and bacteria thrive. The bacteria live on hydrogen. The spring discharges about 550 gallons of hot water per minute into the Firehole River.
