Marble for "The Tomb of the Unknowns"
There is special significance to this huge slab of marble - it has been selected by Arlington National Cemetery to replace the current "Tomb of the Unknown" in Arlington. The current monument, guarded 24 hours a days, every day, by "Honor Guards" from the 3rd Infantry Regiment, developed a fissure widening into a small crack some years ago. Every year, as moisture gets into the fissure and expands with freezing temperatures, the crack enlarges. At some point in the future, when funds are made available, this piece of marble (from Marble, Colorado) will be shipped to a mill in North Dakota for finishing and then to Arlington National Cemetery. As an aside, a friend and I were present on a July 2009 day when representatives from Arlington selected this piece of pure white Colorado marble. A little bt of history was witnessed that day, July 13, 2009.
