Chimney Rock Above Kate's Meadow
There aren't that many great "sunset" locations in the San Juans because you get the best results with an unobstructed view to the west. The San Juans are Colorado's largest mountain range and are covered with huge mountains in the 13-14 thousand elevation class. That blocks a lot of sun. But, Chimney Rock and Courthouse Mountain have a clear path for the sun all the way from Utah and west.

Kate's Meadow is so-named after the character "Kate" in the classic Western movie "True Grit" starring John Wayne. The epic gun battle near the end of the movie was filmed in this meadow. The movie was also filmed in the Ridgway area and along Last Dollar Road. My favorite Colorado restaurant is named "True Grit" and is in Ridgway. The chicken-fried steak is world-class and my go-to meal every time I'm in Ridgway.
