0 Dark Thirty at The Bells
Maroon Bells is both a "must photograph" and a "must never again photograph" location for me. The "Bells" have a world-wide aura of being one of the top "must photograph" sites and are easily the most photographed location in Colorado. The perfect image of Maroon Bells must include all of the following elements: snow on the mountains, aspen trees in full, colorful display, puffy clouds, an unobstructed eastern sky, no wind, and a full lake. Of those seven elements, we only got three - unobstructed eastern sky, no wind and mostly colorful aspen trees. In order to stake out a position along the lake you have to arrive in the parking lot no later than 4:30 am or you won't have a place to park your vehicle and you won't have a place to park yourself, your tripod and camera. This image was captured at 4:45 am while waiting on sunrise.
