Denver Rio Grande Western locomotive 493 was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1902 as a standard gauge 2-8-0 Consolidation for service with the DRGW. In 1928 it was rebuilt to narrow gauge status (3' between rails) and worked between Salida and Gunnison, Gunnison - Crested Butte, Alamosa to Antonito and Chama, NM and from Durango to Farmington, NM. It was retired from service in 1970 and assigned to the Durango-Silverton Narrow Gauge. The engine was a real workhorse and was classified as a K-37 with 37,100 lbs or tractive power. The locomotive weighs 183,920 pounds.
