Stormy Black Bear
Stormy Black Bear
From a field of sunflowers on the south saddle of Red Mountain #3, you can see a storm brewing over Black Bear Pass. Look closely and you can follow the road to the summit of Black Bear Pass and see "Ricky" and "Bobby" waterfalls, as well. Black Bear Pass (12,859") lies in the saddle between Trico Peak (13,321') on the far right and Three Needles (13,481') in the middle of the image. The descent from the summit of Black Bear Pass down to Telluride is widely considered one of the most challenging 4WD jeep roads in Colorado. On the far left is Porphyry Basin and Bullion King Lake, usually a very good wildflower location but in 2015, not good at all. The road to that basin is also visible in the left third of the image.
