Western San Juan Mountains
The view from atop Red Mountain #3 is truly inspiring. Red Mountain #3 is privately owned and the area with the criss-crossing road on the lower left is the site of gold exploration. Over $1 million dollars of test holes were drilled and proven reserves of over 400,000 ounces of gold were found. That's the good news. The bad news is the only way to extract it is to use a cyanide-acid leaching process which would essentially dissolve the mountain and pollute the area for miles. Can you say "Super Fund Clean-up Site"? The gold is there - nearly $500 million worth - just no approved and safe way to remove it.
