In the basin directly below the rock walls of American Peak is Sloan Lake. It's blue-green waters are extremely important in that they hold genetically pure populations of Colorado River Cutthroat Trout. Eggs from spawning Cutthroats in this lake were used to develop new populations of the Colorado River strain which were then transplanted into other Colorado waters that had been in the historic range of that particuular species.
