Owl's Head Lighthouse
Owl's Head Lighthouse
Originally built in 1825, the structure was rebuilt in brick in 1852 because of severe decay. The lighthouse was automated in 1989 and stands 100 feet above Penobscot Bay on the south side of the entrance to Rockland harbor. A reliable (?) source tells me it gets its name from the rock formation upon which it sits which is shaped like an owl's head. In the springtime, the slopes are allegedly covered with daisies. That's his story and he's stickin' to it. LOL. I can tell you that the view from the lighthouse is stunning and not to be missed. Unfortunately, my camera missed it. Operator error.
