"Rotten" Rock +
A lot of the mountains in the San Juans are made up of what is described as "rotten rock". Here is an illustration of what "rotten rock" looks like. Mountains made up of this stuff are very dangerous for climbers. Lizard Head south of Telluride is an excellent example of of "rotten rock" mountain. It's considered the most dangerous peak in Colorado by many mountaineers. Maroon Bells near Aspen is another example of "rotten rock".
