North Georgia
If you're on the hunt for huge trophy trout, North Georgia streams such as Duke's Creek, Chestetee River, Chattahooche ("the Hooch") River and The Soque are the places to be. I actually experienced a two day trip a couple of years ago when the smallest trout I caught (of twenty-five) was over four pounds. The largest was a hen rainbow that was 31 1/2" long and weighed 15 pounds 3 ounces. For one shining day she was the state record rainbow. One day later, an 18 pounder was landed. I have a graphite mount of her in my office.
Gunnison River, Colorado
Fishing the Gunnison between the town of Gunnison and Blue Mesa Reservoir will give you the opportunity (at the right time of year) to catch rainbows, cutthroat, beautiful browns and even kokonee salmon making their spawning run up the river. It can be a big river with small side streams and deep pools. It can also be "too popular" and represent "combat" fishing at its worst. Nevertheless, it is a beautiful and productive river that presents great opportunity.
Snake River - Jackson Hole
While I've had decent luck fishing the Snake, it's very frustrating for me. Why? Because I can't keep my eyes off the Tetons and really concentrate on getting a good drift with my fly. I've missed way more fish than I've landed just because my attention was drawn away by the Tetons. Take a look and I think you'll understand.
Lee's Ferry, Arizona
Lee's Ferry is 15 1/2 miles of the Colorado River below Glen Canyon Dam and is my all-time favorite fishing hole. I've been going here since 1982 and have never expereinced anything less than sheer joy.
