San Juan Chief Mill
The San Juan Chief Mill was built in the early 1890’s to work the silver ore from the Mineral Point area. The Boarding House is under the protection of the Colorado Historical Society to ensure its appearance and preservation. The mill never worked a day – shortly after the completion of the mill, congress repealed the Sherman Silver Act in 1893 and the bottom dropped out of the market. Some the steel was taken during WWII for the war effort but most of the damage came from miners taking what they could for use at other sites.
